What paint correction includes

Paint correction is the controlled removal of a very thin layer of clear coat to level out defects. It's what turns hazy, swirled paint into a clear, deep finish. A correction job with us includes:

  • Wash, decontamination and clay where needed so grit isn't polished into the paint
  • Inspection under light to map swirls, scratches and etching
  • Test spot to choose the right pad and polish combination
  • One-step or two-step machine correction across every painted panel
  • Clean-up of polish dust from seals, jambs, handles and trim

Signs your paint needs correcting

  • Circular swirls visible in sunlight or under a streetlight
  • A dull, hazy look on dark paint even straight after a wash
  • Water spots that don't wash off
  • Light scratches from dirty mitts, automatic washes or covers

Our process: the Porsche Cayenne example

A garaged Porsche Cayenne came to us after years of towing a boat. Incorrect washing had left swirls so deep the finish looked distorted. Here's what that job involved, from 8am to 6pm in the owner's garage:

  1. Cut: CarPro Cut on a microfibre pad to remove the heavy swirling.
  2. Refine: CarPro Reflect on an orange foam pad to bring back clarity.
  3. Spot repair: on the rear pillar, minerals from water that pooled and ran down the same line had etched into the clear coat. Isaac knew the paint was original factory clear, so he wet sanded that one section from 1500 up to 5000 grit, then compounded and polished it back.
  4. Result: about 95% defect removal, then a Blask RX520 coating.

No correction is ever perfect. Anyone promising 100% is either removing too much clear coat or not being straight with you.

One-step vs two-step correction

OptionBest forWhat to expect
One-stepNew cars, light wash marksRemoves light haze and marks, big gloss lift
Two-stepHeavier swirls, older dark paintA cutting stage then a refining stage for clarity
Spot wet sandingDeep, isolated etchingUsed sparingly, only where polishing can't reach

Pricing factors

Correction is included in our Ultimate Protection coating package ($1,500 to $2,200 + GST by vehicle size). Stand-alone correction is quoted after inspection, because the time depends on paint hardness, defect depth and vehicle size.

Local context

Sunshine Coast paint takes UV for most of the year, salt near the beach and mineral spotting from tank and bore water. Thin factory clear coat on many Japanese cars leaves less room to correct, so we judge every panel carefully rather than chasing perfection on a clear coat that can't afford it.

Isaac did an amazing job on my ranger raptor, very easy to work with from start to finish, and very happy with the ceramic coating done, he even did the door jambs and interior. Gave me instructions to look after car going forward.

Isaac spent 9 hrs on my car and gave back to me better than the Dealers handover. I would never get Dealers ever to Coat any car. Any new car buyer I full recommend Isaac's Car Detailing.

FAQ

Paint correction questions

Does paint correction remove all scratches?

No. It removes swirls and light scratches. Deep scratches that go through the clear coat can only be improved, and we'll tell you before we start.

How long does paint correction take?

Most correction and coating jobs take a full day. Our Cayenne job ran from 8am to 6pm.

Does correction thin my clear coat?

It removes a very small amount. That's why we use the least aggressive method that works and only wet sand isolated spots.

Should I coat after paint correction?

Yes. A coating locks in the corrected finish and makes it far easier to keep swirl-free.
